In 1973 a decision about pulling down
of the old Petržalka
district was made. The area was large enough to move in young families
which those days did not have where to live.
Step by
step houses, gardens, orchards, woods and fields started to disappear.
The intention of the od Petržalka district´s demolition was not so
symple as it could appear for the first sight. The great majority of the
local inhabitants lived in detached houses and did not want to hear
about the house building at all. The decision about the putting house
building into action was made by politician and not by civil engineering
experts. The local people of the old Petržalka district got new flats as
a compensation for their houses and landed properties.
The first
block of flats in Petržalka was built in 1976. From that year until 1987
6000 new flats were added up every year where 13-14 000 inhabitants
moved in. The main aim was to built as many flats as possible spending
as little as possible. Today we understand how wrong it was to built
this way, schematically, without any inventiveness, an original mind.
The first inhabitants of the new housing estste were happy, got new
flats but this advantage of theirs was fading because hundreds of
building mechanisms were still working making their lives a misery for
several years. That time there were no pavements, shops, schools and
playgrounds for children built.
