The white crayon - the art of living in the dark

Students from all over Slovakia have joined a collection named The White Crayon on 15. October 2002. For the first time this collection took place in Slovakia. The money that was raised went to the account of The Union for the Blind. The employees of the Union divided us, the students, into pairs. Each pair was given their own spot where we stopped people and asked them to contribute a symbolical amount of 20 Slovak crowns in order to help the blind and visually impaired. The ones who did have become a symbol of this collection – a white crayon.

As this was the first time for this country people were very interested. They were stopping, asking for information about the collection.  If they could they even contributed bigger sum of money. The more money did a person give the more white crayons they became. The plan was to hold the collection for 10 hours but the 200 white crayons were gone in 3 hours.

That’s what happened to all the pairs of students. Each pair – 200 crayons. It was a very successful collection and by the end of the day all we could offer were the flyers as the crayons were already gone. Well, who would refuse to help the people who have lived (and will have to live) their whole life in the dark(ness)?
