School-leaving party is a student´s party in the countries of the former Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. It has been celebrated since the 16th century. Exactly so old is students song Gaudeamus igitur which is sung in a choir at the party and is a students hymn.

The students invite their parents, professors and friends to this party. It is, in fact, the first social event in high style (the boys in evening suits, the girls in evening gowns with low-necked garment), which is a confirmation of their entering the adults world - a festive dinner and after a students ball.

Those, who present a festive speech to both the parents and teachers, are the most intimidated thanking them in the name of their school-fellows.

The tension will release in the unofficial part of the party where the students introduce themselves performing various scenes or dances. After the programme full of fun and after cutting the cake with the names of all the pupils in the class there follows dancing and relaxed entertainment. The class-teacher will pin up a green ribbon on the chest of each student. This ribbon is a symbol of the hope that the sutdents will be successful in leaving exams and so will be their start to life. The students wear the ribbon on their coats or anoraks.

Before the party the students decorate the classroom in green colour, the classroom´s door as a rule with a wide, green ribon and even they tie with it their class-book where absence from school and marks are registrated.

Just before the school-leaving party or after it greetings cards with students´ photos are sent to all friends and relatives. The greetins are mostly funny and full of recession.
