On the 12th November 2004 with our friends from project Socrates we visited the castle Červený Kameň. It stans on the hill between villages Píla and Častá (339 m) about 9 km from Modra. In the past, it was named Bibersburg, what in German means Bobrý castle. Opinions about the origin of its today´s name differ. Most presumable version is the name according to quartzitic cliff of red colour, on which the Castle stands (also in surroundings is possible to see reddish coloured rocks). The Červený Kameň was build in the middle of 13th century and created a part of frontier fortification of west boards of Ugrian, lying from Bratislava till Žilina. At the beginning of 16th century, it became a property of family Thurzo and in 1535 it was owned by family Fuggers, who belonged to the richest European magnates. It was very modern, "capitalistic" oriented clan, with origin from german Augsburg, mostly dealt with mining and processing of metals. Fuggers initiated complete rebuilding of the castle - on the periphery of "an old castle" they built new property with central square yard and four corner bastions. The project of the most modern fortifications was reputedly designed by self Alfred Durer. The destructive turkish invasions did not overgo not even the locality of Malé Karpaty and straightly touched also the estate of Červený Kameň (it came to unmaning of several villages lying near the castle). At the end of 16th century, Červený Kameň became property of the Palfy family. |
