An Excursion in Komarno |

· T B On the way along the Danube River to Komarno. Komarno is a city, we are interested in its history and in its present face. Komarno is placed on the cofluence of the Danube and Vah River in 108 - 115 m altitude. It is one of the oldest settlement in Carpatian basin. This area is inhabited from Middle Ages. There Celts and Romans lived. In the end of the 9th century the Hungarian tribes came to this territory. They created a settlement with strategic position. The Hungarians also established a village called Camarum (1075), Kamarn (1218), Camarum (1268), Comaron. "Villa Camarum" was one of the 23 villages, that belonged to the Komarno castle. The city Komarno was officially noted by document of the king Bela IV in 1265. He gave an approval to the city. During the reign of Maria Theresia Komarno became an independent city. Around 10 000 inhabitants lived there and the city flourished. During the years 1848-49. Komarno played an important role as the last bastion of the Hungarian revolution. In the end of the 19th century they built two iron bridges over the Danube and Vah rivers. Very important is the strategic position of the city. It lies 100 km far from Bratislava and Budapest and 150 km far from Vienna. During our visit we have admired the historical part - the European Square. There are situated buildings in vyrious european styles. You can compare the differences of these buildings. We visited the Podunaj museum, with its expositions, they documents rich history of Komarno and its surroundings, life and works of important people, which were born or lived in Komarno. We have to mention famous hungarian writer Mora Johaiho who was born in the city and wellknown composer Franz Lehar. Komarno region is not only the most wonderfull, but also the lowest placed place in Slovakia. It is known for some landscape parks, springs with healing effects. The most interesting was the visit of Roman war camp - Iža. It is national historical monument, which is situated 2 km far from village Iža. It belongs to biggest Roman build architectural objects build in Barbariku. We took a look at remains of this fortification. We all enjoyed the next attraction of the region - Lodny mlyn Kolarovo. The programme of the excursion was very rich so we don´t have enough time to visit hot springs in Komarno. Its thermal water is used to cure many affections. On the way back we stoped in Nitrianska Blatna because of its historical monument, which is hidden in the forests. The Caple of Saint George is an ancient historical monument. The base of the rotund is very old.
