Gabčíkovo - the water rate work

  • The river Danube connects our Slovak republic with states and nationalities of integrating Europe. After the opening of Ryn-Mohan-Danube channel (1922) it creates a significant part of transeuropean water artery from Amsterdam to Sulin.
  • Slovakia started to think about the use of Danube in 1951. The idea contained some questions about passages and questions about the protection of neighbouring areas. But catastrophic floods on Danube (1954-1965) caused big damages have speeded up the preparation and realisation of the water rate works.
  • In 1977 after the contract between Czechoslovakia and Hungary, Slovakia started to build GABCIKOVO-NAGYMAROS water rate work (1978). The construction continued till 1990. In that time Hungarian side have resigned from the contract and they have stopped on the NAGYMAROS grade. Even though Slovak side has continued in construction. The work was finished in Čunovo a part of Slovakia in 1992.
  • The contribution of the water rate work:

  • flood protection of neighbouring area,

  •  fluency of international transport

  • hydronergetic use of Danube,

  • source enlargment of ground water for food-supply,

  • the improvement of ecology according to water and biological life,

  • the enlargement of recreational opportunities (fishing, yachting, windsurfing, water scooter),

  •  build up of canoe slalom way.
